This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you can even turn off your internet connection before you start.

How it works

  1. Drop .avif files onto the box, or choose them from your device. Use Chrome, Firefox or Safari 16 or later, which can decode AVIF.
  2. Set the JPG quality. 0.9 keeps the picture visually unchanged; lower values produce a smaller file.
  3. Press Convert to JPG. The image is decoded by your browser and re-encoded locally.
  4. Download the JPG files one by one or as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses about 50% better than JPG and is served by many websites and produced by some newer cameras and phones. Older image viewers, office software, photo printers and many upload forms do not accept it yet.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and writes the JPG entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page works offline once loaded.
Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Decoding AVIF is built into Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later. If your browser cannot decode it, the file will be reported as unreadable; updating the browser usually fixes that.
Does the quality suffer?
AVIF is lossy and JPG is lossy, so a small amount of loss is added. At quality 0.9 it is invisible. The JPG will typically be two to three times the size of the AVIF.
What about transparency and HDR?
JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become white. HDR content is tone-mapped to standard range. Use AVIF to PNG to keep transparency.
What are the free limits?
The free plan allows 3 files per run, 20 MB per file and 10 runs per day. Pro removes these limits.
