Example
Example: a 9-minute concert video cut into its four songs
concert.mp4 is 9 minutes 12 seconds long and holds four songs, with the gaps between them at 2:05, 4:40 and 7:02. Where to cut: At times I type, with 2:05, 4:40, 7:02 in the box. Size and Sound stay as they are.
- Three cut times make four pieces: 0:00–2:05, 2:05–4:40, 4:40–7:02 and 7:02–9:12.
- Each piece is decoded and encoded again, so it starts exactly at the time typed rather than at the nearest keyframe.
- The files are numbered in order, concert-1.mp4 to concert-4.mp4. With ten pieces or more the numbers get a leading zero: concert-01.mp4 and so on.
| Video | Where to cut | Pieces |
|---|---|---|
| 9:12 | At 2:05, 4:40, 7:02 | 4, of 2:05, 2:35, 2:22 and 2:10 |
| 10:00 | Pieces of 1 minute | 10 of 1:00, numbered -01 to -10 |
| 3:20 | Pieces of 1 minute | 4: three of 1:00, one of 0:20 |
| 14:30 | 3 equal parts | 3 of 4:50 |
| 9:12 | Pieces of 15 seconds | 37: 36 of 0:15, one of 0:12 |
Four MP4s, one per song, each playable on its own at the original size and with its sound. The last piece is whatever is left after the final cut.
How it works
- Add an MP4 or a MOV.
- Choose how to cut it: into so many equal parts, into pieces of a fixed length, or at the exact times you type.
- Leave the size alone to keep the original, or drop it to 720p if the pieces are going somewhere with an upload limit.
- Press split. Each piece downloads as its own file, numbered in order.
Frequently asked questions
- How many pieces can I get?
- Fifty. Beyond that the browser is holding more video in memory than it can comfortably manage, and you are better off splitting in two passes.
- Are the cuts exact?
- Yes to within a frame. The video is decoded and encoded again rather than copied, so a cut can land anywhere rather than only on a keyframe — the trade is that it takes longer than a copy would.
- Why are the pieces a different size from the original?
- Because they are encoded again. The bitrate is chosen from the original so the result looks the same, but the numbers will not match exactly. Keeping the original size avoids any scaling on top of that.
- How do I type the cut times?
- As minutes and seconds (1:30), with hours when needed (1:02:03), or as plain seconds (90), separated by commas or spaces. A time at or past the end of the video is ignored, and so is a time typed twice.
- Can I cut a video into 1-minute pieces?
- Choose “Into pieces of a set length” and 1 minute. A 10-minute video becomes ten 1-minute files; a 3:20 one becomes three of a minute and a last one of 20 seconds.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is decoded and encoded by your own browser, and never leaves your computer.
