Example

A youth soccer game in three phone clips plus a friend’s goal, as one MP4

A parent filmed a Saturday game on one phone, in landscape at 1920 × 1080: IMG_2041.MOV, IMG_2042.MOV and IMG_2043.MOV, 0:52, 1:10 and 0:38 long, each under the free 150 MB. Another parent then sends goal.mp4, 18 seconds, filmed upright at 1080 × 1920.

  1. Drop the clips and put them in playing order with the arrows. The first one in the list sets the size and the file name, so keep a landscape clip first.
  2. The three clips from one phone share codec, size, orientation and settings: their frames are copied end to end, with no re-encoding, in seconds.
  3. With the upright goal added they no longer match, so all four are re-encoded to the first clip’s 1920 × 1080; the goal fills about 608 × 1080 in the middle, with black bars left and right.
  4. Re-encoding takes about as long as the videos last and needs Chrome, Edge or Safari 16.4 or newer. The sound is copied; if the friend’s phone recorded it differently, the tool says so before joining.

How it works

  1. Drop two or more MP4 or MOV clips onto the box.
  2. Use the arrows in the file list to put them in the order they should play.
  3. Select Merge videos and download the joined MP4.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video re-encoded?
Only when it has to be. Clips that share the same codec, size, orientation and settings — typically clips from the same phone or camera — are joined by copying their frames end to end: no quality is lost and it takes seconds. Clips that differ are decoded and encoded again at the size of the first clip, up to 1920 pixels, with black bars where the shapes differ; that takes about as long as the videos last.
What happens with the sound?
It is copied as it is, which needs every clip to have AAC sound recorded the same way, as phones do. If one clip has no sound while the others do, joining them would put the sound out of step with the picture, so the tool stops and says which clip it is. Remove the sound from all of them, or join the ones with sound.
Which clips can be joined?
MP4, M4V and MOV, from phones, cameras and screen recorders. Re-encoding clips that differ needs Chrome, Edge or Safari 16.4 or newer; clips that match can be joined in any recent browser.
Can I merge a portrait and a landscape video?
Yes, but they are re-encoded: everything takes the first clip’s shape and size, up to 1920 pixels on the long side, and a clip of the other shape is fitted in with black bars. An upright clip in a 1920 × 1080 video fills about 608 × 1080 in the middle. Put first a clip with the shape most of them share.
Does it keep 4K?
When the clips match and are copied, yes: 4K stays 4K, frame for frame. When they have to be re-encoded, the result is at most 1920 pixels on its long side, so a landscape 4K first clip gives 1920 × 1080.
Is anything uploaded, and what are the free limits?
Nothing is uploaded; the clips are joined in your browser. The free plan joins up to 10 clips of 150 MB each, 5 times a day. Pro removes these limits.
