Example
Example: a two-minute voice introduction for a job application, under 5 MB
An application form asks for a spoken introduction of up to two minutes, uploaded as MP3 or M4A of no more than 5 MB. On a laptop: Save as MP3, and “Reduce echo and background noise” left on, because it is speech.
- Select Start recording and allow the microphone. Speaking at a normal distance, the green bar beside the timer moves with the voice and passes halfway on stressed words: a good level.
- A bar that hardly moves means the microphone is far away or turned down; a bar that stays full means too close or too loud. It fills when the peaks come near the loudest the file can hold.
- Lost the thread? Pause: the timer stops and the pause is not recorded. Resume, finish, and select Stop.
- The recording is written again as 128 kbps mono MP3 and appears in a player, to listen to before downloading.
| Length | MP3 or M4A (128 kbps) | WAV (44.1 / 48 kHz) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | about 1.9 MB | about 10.6 / 11.5 MB |
| 5 minutes | about 4.8 MB | about 26.5 / 28.8 MB |
| 20 minutes | about 19.2 MB | about 105.8 / 115.2 MB |
voice-recording-2026-11-05-143012.mp3 (named with the date and time), 2:00 long and about 1.9 MB, well under the form’s 5 MB; as WAV it would be over 10 MB. Download it before closing the page, because the recording is not kept.
How it works
- Choose the format to save as, and leave "Reduce echo and background noise" on for speech.
- Select Start recording and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
- Speak. The level meter shows the microphone is picking you up; pause and resume as you need.
- Select Stop, listen to the recording, and download it.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I switch off "Reduce echo and background noise"?
- For speech, keep it on: it evens out the volume and removes hum and room echo. Switch it off to record music or an instrument, where the same processing flattens the sound.
- How long can I record?
- As long as your device has memory for — hours of speech. On a phone, keep the page open and the screen on, because the browser may stop the microphone when you switch apps or the screen locks. The free plan does not limit the length, but each finished recording counts as one of its 5 runs a day.
- It says the microphone was not allowed. What now?
- Your browser blocked it. Select the lock or settings icon in the address bar, allow the microphone for this site, and try again. On a computer, also check that a microphone is connected and chosen as the input in the system settings.
- Which format should I choose?
- MP3 plays everywhere. M4A (AAC) is written at the same 128 kbps, so it comes out about the same size, roughly 1 MB a minute; choose it when an app or a form asks for M4A. WAV is uncompressed, for editing, at about 5.3 to 5.8 MB a minute. Every format is saved in mono, which suits a voice.
- What should the level bar look like?
- It should move with your voice and reach about halfway on louder words. If it barely moves, come closer or raise the microphone level in your system settings; if it is full most of the time, move back or speak more softly, or the loudest parts may distort.
- Is my recording uploaded?
- No. The sound goes from the microphone into this page and is saved on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the recording is gone from the page once you close it, so download it first.
