Example

Example: a 20-minute video-call interview as a mono WAV for a podcast edit

A podcast host recorded a 20-minute interview over a video call: interview.mp4, about 60 MB, well inside the free 150 MB a file. The editing software wants WAV. Both voices come through one microphone track anyway, so Channels: Mono (half the size).

  1. The sound is decoded in the browser and written as 16-bit WAV with no compression; the picture is left out.
  2. The sample rate is the one the browser decodes at, usually 48 kHz: in mono that is 96,000 bytes for every second.
  3. Mono averages the left and right channels into one, so nothing panned to one side is lost.
  4. The file takes the video’s name: interview.wav.
Channels 1 minute 20 minutes 1 hour

Stereo, 44.1 kHz 10.6 MB211.7 MB635.0 MB
Mono, 44.1 kHz 5.3 MB105.8 MB317.5 MB

interview.wav, about 115 MB in mono: larger than the video it came from. That is normal, because the video’s sound was compressed and WAV is not. To send the sound rather than edit it, MP4 to MP3 makes a far smaller file.

How it works

  1. Drop the video files: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.
  2. Keep stereo, or choose mono for a voice recording, which halves the file.
  3. Press Convert to WAV. The sound is decoded in your browser.
  4. Download the WAV files.

Frequently asked questions

WAV or MP3?
WAV keeps the sound exactly as decoded, which is what editing software, some transcription services and audio analysis want. It is about ten times the size of an MP3; for listening or sending, MP4 to MP3 is the better choice.
Does it lose quality?
No more than the video’s own sound already has: the sound is decoded and written without compression.
Why is the WAV bigger than my video?
A video stores its sound compressed, usually as AAC at 128 kbps or so; WAV stores every sample. At 48 kHz, a minute of stereo WAV is 11.5 MB and a minute of mono 5.8 MB, whatever the video weighed.
What sample rate and bit depth is the WAV?
16-bit PCM at the rate the browser decodes at, usually 48 kHz, which is also the rate of most video sound. Editing software converts it on import if the project runs at 44.1 kHz.
Can I convert several videos at once?
Yes: up to 3 videos per run on the free plan, each up to 150 MB, and 5 runs a day. Each video gives its own WAV, named after it.
Is the video uploaded?
No. The sound is extracted in your browser, even for videos up to 150 MB on the free plan.
