Example
Example: a 22-second podcast intro with long pauses, cut to 16.65 seconds
A podcast intro, intro.mp3, 22.0 seconds: one second of room tone, then speech from 1.0 to 4.0 s, 4.8 to 9.0 s, 9.3 to 14.0 s and 16.5 to 20.0 s, then two seconds of room tone. The room hum peaks at about −48 dB. Settings as they come: Quiet (−40 dB), gaps longer than 0.5 seconds, 0.15 seconds left at each end.
- Loudness is measured every 20 ms. The hum stays under −40 dB, so the lead-in, the 0.8 s and 2.5 s pauses and the tail count as silence.
- The 0.3 s breath at 9.0 s is shorter than 0.5 s, so it stays in the speech around it.
- Each cut keeps 0.15 s next to the speech: the kept pieces are 0.84–4.16 s, 4.64–14.16 s and 16.34–20.16 s, joined with a 5 ms crossfade so there is no click.
| Settings | What is cut | New length |
|---|---|---|
| As they come (−40 dB, 0.5 s, 0.15 s) | lead-in, 0.8 s and 2.5 s pauses, tail | 16.65 s |
| Only gaps longer than 1 second | the 0.8 s pause stays | about 17.1 s |
| Leave at each end: Nothing | the same gaps, cut right up to the speech | 15.69 s |
| Very quiet (−50 dB) | nothing: the −48 dB hum counts as sound | 22.0 s |
intro-cut.mp3, 16.65 seconds instead of 22, in the same format as the original. A video comes back as name-cut.mp4 with the picture cut at exactly the same points.
How it works
- Drop a sound file or an MP4 video.
- Set what counts as silence and how long a gap has to be before it is cut.
- Leave a little at each end so speech is not clipped — 0.15 seconds sounds natural.
- Press Cut the silences and download. A video comes back as MP4 with the picture and sound still together.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it cut words off?
- Not with a little padding, which is on by default: the cut starts a moment after the speech stops and ends a moment before it starts again. If it sounds hurried, give it more.
- Why is my recording cut in the wrong places?
- Probably the threshold. A noisy room never falls to −50 dB, so nothing is cut; a very clean recording with quiet breathing may need −50 rather than −40. Try one step either way.
- Does the video stay in sync?
- Yes. The frames inside a cut are left out and the timestamps are closed up, and the sound is rebuilt from the same list of kept stretches, so picture and sound are cut at exactly the same points.
- Are short pauses between words cut too?
- No. Only gaps longer than the “Only gaps longer than” setting are cut, 0.5 seconds as it comes, so a breath or a short pause between words stays, as the 0.3 s breath in the example does. Choose 1 or 2 seconds to cut only the long silences, or 0.3 seconds for a tighter edit.
- How big a file can I use?
- On the free plan, 150 MB per file, 3 files per run and 5 runs a day; Pro removes those limits. 150 MB is about a minute of 1080p phone video, or well over two hours of MP3 speech at 128 kbps.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. It all happens in your browser, which is also why a long video takes a while.
