Example
Example: a rental walkthrough video without the phone call heard in the background
A landlord films a walkthrough of a flat for a rental listing on an Android phone: walkthrough.mp4, 1 minute 5 seconds of 1080p H.264, about 130 MB, under the free 150 MB. Halfway round, a call with the plumber can be heard, prices and a neighbour’s name included. A garden clip from an iPhone, garden.MOV in HEVC, goes in the same run.
- Drop both files onto the box and press Remove the sound. On the free plan up to 3 clips go in one run, each up to 150 MB.
- Each picture track is copied frame for frame into a new MP4: H.264 stays H.264, HEVC stays HEVC, and nothing is decoded or encoded again.
- The sound track is simply left out, so each file shrinks only by its sound — about 1–2 MB a minute for the AAC phones record.
- A video whose picture cannot be copied, such as ProRes from an editing program, is refused with a message naming the file; leave it out of the run and use Compress video for it.
| File | Picture | Comes back as |
|---|---|---|
| walkthrough.mp4 (Android) | H.264, 1:05 | walkthrough-silent.mp4, 1:05, no sound track |
| garden.MOV (iPhone) | HEVC (H.265), 0:40 | garden-silent.mp4, 0:40, no sound track |
| export.mov (editing program) | ProRes | not copied: a message names it |
Two silent MP4s with the same length and the same picture as the originals, ready for the listing; nobody who downloads them hears the call. The originals stay on your phone or computer as they were — keep them if you might want the sound.
How it works
- Drop the video onto the box. MP4 and MOV.
- Press Remove the sound.
- The clip comes back the same length and the same quality, with no sound track at all.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this make the video worse?
- No, and that is the point. The picture is copied across frame for frame exactly as it was encoded — nothing is decoded and nothing is encoded again — so there is no second generation of quality loss. It is also why it finishes in about the time it takes to read the file rather than the time it takes to re-encode one.
- Can I get the sound back afterwards?
- Not from the silenced file: the sound track is gone from it. Keep your original if you might want it. If you wanted the sound on its own, Video to MP3 saves it as a file you can keep.
- Why not just mute it in my player?
- Muting is a setting on your player and travels with nobody. Uploading a clip with the sound still in it means the sound is still there for whoever downloads it — which matters if what was said in the background was not meant to be shared.
- Which files does it take?
- MP4 and MOV whose picture is H.264 or HEVC (H.265), which is what phones, cameras and screen recorders produce. A file in another picture codec cannot be copied across as it stands; Compress video will re-encode it for you.
- Can I remove the sound from several videos at once?
- Yes. Drop up to 3 clips in one run on the free plan, each up to 150 MB, and each comes back as its own file named after it with -silent added: garden.MOV becomes garden-silent.mp4. If one clip in the run cannot be copied, the message names it; take it out and run the others again.
- Does an iPhone MOV come back as an MP4?
- Yes. The HEVC (H.265) picture an iPhone records by default is copied into an MP4 as it is, not converted to H.264, so it plays wherever the original played, and the orientation the phone recorded is kept.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. It is read and rewritten in your browser, which is also why a 150 MB file is fine here on the free plan when 20 MB is the limit elsewhere: nothing has to travel.
