Example
Example: a 2.9-second sale GIF made into an 8.6-second MP4 for Instagram
A small shop has its weekend sale banner as a square GIF: sale.gif, 1080 × 1080 pixels, 24 frames of 120 ms each, with see-through corners. Instagram doesn’t post GIFs, and a video that is over in under three seconds is easy to miss, so the animation should play three times.
- Drop the GIF, set “Play the animation” to 3 times, leave “Colour behind transparent pixels” on White and press Convert to MP4.
- Each frame keeps its own delay: one play is 24 × 120 ms = 2.88 seconds, three plays 8.64 seconds.
- The size stays 1080 × 1080. An odd number of pixels is rounded to an even one, as H.264 requires, and a GIF over 1920 pixels on its long side is scaled down to 1920.
| GIF | Frames × delay | MP4 | 1 play | 3 times |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080 × 1080 | 24 × 120 ms | 1080 × 1080 | 2.88 s | 8.64 s |
| 480 × 270 | 36 × 40 ms | 480 × 270 | 1.44 s | 4.32 s |
| 500 × 375 | 18 × 0 ms (played as 100 ms) | 500 × 376 | 1.8 s | 5.4 s |
| 2400 × 1350 | 10 × 100 ms | 1920 × 1080 | 1 s | 3 s |
sale.mp4 runs 8.64 seconds, white where the GIF was see-through. Frames with a delay of 0 or 10 ms are played at 100 ms, as browsers show them, so the video runs at the speed you know from the GIF.
How it works
- Drop one or more GIFs onto the box.
- Choose how many times the animation plays, since a video does not loop by itself.
- Press Convert to MP4 and download.
Frequently asked questions
- Why convert a GIF to MP4?
- An MP4 of the same animation is often a tenth of the size, and it is what X, Instagram and messaging apps expect for a moving picture.
- What happens to transparency?
- MP4 has none, so transparent pixels are filled with white or black.
- Will the MP4 play at the same speed as the GIF?
- Yes. Every frame is shown for its own delay, so a GIF with a long pause on its last frame keeps that pause. A delay of 0 or 10 ms, which browsers stretch to 100 ms, becomes 100 ms in the video too.
- Why is my video one pixel bigger than the GIF?
- H.264 video needs an even width and height, so an odd side is rounded: 500 × 375 becomes 500 × 376, 399 × 225 becomes 400 × 226. A GIF longer than 1920 pixels on a side is scaled down to 1920, so 2400 × 1350 becomes 1920 × 1080.
- How many GIFs can I convert at once?
- On the free plan, 3 GIFs of up to 20 MB each per run, 5 runs a day; each comes out as its own MP4 with the same name. Pro removes these limits.
- Is the GIF uploaded?
- No. It is converted in your browser.
