Worked example — Change video resolution

Use the following inputs and settings.

Resolution (longest side) Up to 720p (1280 px)
Quality Best picture
Aim for a size No target, use the quality below
Output files 1
Output clip.mp4
File size 111166 B
Output 3.00 s

Expected result — Output files: 1.

How it works

  1. Add the video — MP4, M4V or MOV, which covers phones, screen recordings and most cameras.
  2. Choose the resolution. It counts the long side: 720p makes it 1280 pixels, so a portrait phone video comes out 720 × 1280. 720p is the usual answer to “the file is too big”.
  3. Leave the quality on Best picture unless you also need the file to be much smaller.
  4. Download the re-encoded video.

Frequently asked questions

Will it look worse?
It has fewer pixels, so on a big screen yes. Watched at the size it now is, a 720p copy of a 1080p video is hard to tell apart — which is why it is the usual compromise.
Can I make it bigger instead?
No, and nothing else honestly can either: the detail is not in the file. Upscaling invents pixels, and for video that mostly means a softer picture.
Does the sound change?
No. The sound track is copied across as it is, not re-encoded, so it loses nothing. A track that cannot be copied that way, such as the uncompressed PCM in some camcorder MOV files, is reported rather than dropped; choose Remove the sound then. You can also remove it if you only need the picture.
Is my video uploaded?
No — it is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, which is also why a long video takes a while.
